Choosing a preschool is about so much more than finding a place to fill the day. It’s about finding a community where your child feels safe, seen, and excited to come back each morning.
These early years are something special. They’re when children begin to discover who they are, build confidence, and develop a love of learning that lasts for years. At United Friends School, our preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds is designed to support that kind of growth in ways that feel joyful, natural, and meaningful.
Where Learning Feels Alive - Learning Through Play
In a strong preschool classroom, learning rarely looks formal. It looks like children building, creating, negotiating, wondering, and trying again.
At UFS, play is where learning begins.
As the season begins to change and the weather warms, the children at UFS have noticed the world around them: buds forming on trees, birds returning, and the feel of spring in the air. These seasonal shifts spark curiosity, and we follow that curiosity wherever it leads.
Inside the classroom, that curiosity recently took shape through a habitat project. Children worked together to create animal sculptures and build model habitats designed to meet each animal’s needs. What may have looked like art and play on the surface was actually rich with learning. Students were exploring problem-solving, spatial awareness, and the relationships between living things and their environments.
They were incredibly proud of their work and even more excited to share it with one another.
These experiences are laying the groundwork for early literacy, math, and critical thinking in ways that feel natural and engaging. Just as importantly, children begin to see themselves as capable learners, begin to trust their own ideas, and stay with a process.

Hands-On Exploration: Essential Skills Start Here
As parents begin to think about preschool, it’s natural to wonder what their child will learn. Letters and numbers certainly play a role, but some of the most important growth at this age happens in less visible ways.
When one of the preschool class’s swallowtail butterflies emerged from its chrysalis, it sparked genuine awe throughout the classroom. The children observed carefully, asked thoughtful questions, and then helped release the butterfly outdoors. Now, they eagerly check on the remaining chrysalises, making predictions about what might happen next.
Outdoor learning continues in equally meaningful ways at United Friends School. In the mud kitchen and garden spaces, children have been digging into the soil, discovering worms and insects, and immediately thinking about how to care for them. This has led to collaborative problem-solving while building small, temporary habitats and asking questions such as, "What do these creatures need to stay safe?"
That question has now evolved into the next classroom project: building a worm habitat.
The lessons learned in a UFS classroom naturally lead to further exploration and continued understanding. In preschool, children are developing skills to manage themselves, stay focused on tasks, work through frustration, and try again when things don’t go as planned. They begin to follow routines, collaborate with others, and take small steps toward independence, which helps ignite their curiosity.
Taking the Time to Understand Each Child
One of the most meaningful aspects of a preschool experience is how a child feels each day when they walk into the classroom.
Taking the time to understand each child is deeply rooted in Quaker ideals and values. At UFS, teachers honor the individuality of every student, paying close attention to what sparks curiosity, what comes naturally, and where a child may need extra support. This thoughtful approach allows learning to unfold in a way that feels authentic and comfortable, rather than something imposed from the outside.
As a result, children feel seen, known, and valued. In a secure environment, they become more willing to take risks, share their ideas, and try new things, building confidence with each experience.
Rooted in Values, Lived Every Day
At United Friends School, Quaker values shape the preschool experience in ways that feel simple, steady, and deeply human.
Children experience what it means to be part of a community that cares for one another. They practice resolving conflicts with patience and respect. They begin to understand that their voice matters, and that others’ voices do too.
Students of all ages are offered meaningful opportunities to share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings during classroom and weekly all-school meetings. In these moments of reflection and connection, every voice is heard and valued. As students grow more comfortable expressing themselves, they build confidence, deepen their sense of self, and begin to understand who they are becoming.
Throughout the day, quiet moments are intentionally woven into the rhythm, giving opportunities to pause, settle, and notice their thoughts and feelings. These experiences nurture self-awareness and a sense of calm that supports learning in all areas. Over time, children come to see themselves as capable learners and valued members of their community, carrying this growing confidence with them as they continue to develop.

A Place to Grow
At United Friends School, our preschool program for three and four-year-olds is built from meaningful moments, both big and small, that create a thoughtful and connected learning experience. Students share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings during classroom and weekly all-school meetings, where every voice is heard and valued. As they grow more comfortable expressing themselves, they build confidence and begin to understand who they are becoming.
Quiet moments are woven into each day, giving children time to pause, notice their thoughts and feelings, and develop a sense of calm that supports their learning. Children are not simply absorbing information; they are learning to think, to care, and to collaborate. They are encouraged to follow their curiosity, supported as they try new things, and given the space to grow into themselves.
