In our new First Light classroom at United Friends School, it begins with teachers greeting each child with intention, and helping them settle in with comfort and trust.

From there, the day is shaped around their rhythms. Open-ended materials. Time outdoors. Shared meals. Quiet moments. Gentle guidance.

First Light isn’t about rushing toddlers through activities. It’s about creating a space where they can explore at their own pace and begin to feel part of a caring community.

Working together, students explored how to find the greater number using playful comparison and careful thinking. With the help of the “greater gator,” children learned that the gator’s mouth always opens toward the bigger number because it’s extra hungry for more. Through partner talk, hands-on materials, and lots of joyful discussion, students practiced comparing numbers, explaining their thinking, and cheering one another on. This collaborative math work builds confidence, strengthens number sense, and shows that learning is even better when we do it together. 🐊➕

✨ Earlier this week, our Hicks Class (Preschool) scientists had a blast exploring two colorful experiments! First, they mixed crayons with paint to see what would happen when wax and paint come together. Then they tried a traveling water experiment and watched in amazement as colors crept up paper towels and slowly blended together like magic. The students were fascinated as the colors of the rainbow met in the middle… and eventually mixed into a deep, mysterious black! 🌈🖤

What a joyful evening! Throughout our main school building, families explored engaging Farm-to-Table projects created by friends from Preschool through 8th Grade—each display showing curiosity, care, and so much creativity. The Helman-Osborn Class filled the Big Room with incredible work, and students proudly guided their families through classrooms, sharing their own learning and celebrating their peers.

🍁Fall is in the air at UFS! 🍁

🖌️ The Mott Class (Preschool) has been hard at work on their fall landscape. Today, students made paint from walnut shells and charcoal that will be used on the landscape. They have been learning about the food and shelter that trees provide for people and animals in the fall, and are starting to explore the other ways that trees provide materials and tools that we can use to build and create things. 🌳

🍂 The Rustin Class (TK/K) explored leaves up close. The math curriculum’s calendar has been revealing a “surprise leaf” each day — helping students spot patterns, colors, and shapes while counting and predicting what might come next. Inspired by all that leafy fun, each student selected a leaf or two, painted it carefully with white paint, and gently pressed it onto black paper to create a beautiful contrast print. The results were stunning — and the classroom was filled with cheerful chatter about shapes, symmetry, and nature’s surprises. 🍁✨

☀️ Yesterday, our Helman-Osborn (6th-8th) students went on their first trip of the year to Lake Nockamixon! Students closely studied the double-crested cormorant and had the opportunity to observe and sketch the birds. They also conducted water tests for phosphate, nitrate, pH, and dissolved oxygen and recorded their results. The trip concluded with an exploration of the shoreline and some snacks. What a beautiful afternoon spent outdoors! 🦆🧪✨

We’re excited to share that United Friends School will launch a new toddler program, First Light, in January 2026.

First Light is a full-day, play-based experience for two-year-olds, grounded in Quaker values, nature-based learning, and nurturing relationships. Children will enjoy a daily rhythm of music, movement, storytelling, outdoor play, and sensory exploration in a warm and thoughtfully designed classroom space.

This program responds to a growing need in our community for care that is not only full-day, but also deeply intentional. By welcoming children at an earlier age, we strengthen the foundation of our school community and extend the UFS experience to even our youngest learners.
