For many families, the term “Friends school” is unfamiliar at first.
But step inside one, and you’ll notice something different right away: how students interact, how teachers guide, and how much space there is for reflection, curiosity, and connection.
That difference stems from a long-standing approach to education that remains deeply relevant today.
Quaker, or Friends, schools are rooted in values such as peace, equality, simplicity, and community. These principles guide daily life in the classroom, inspiring students to learn, collaborate, and explore their place in the world.

What is a Friends Education?
At its heart, a Friends education celebrates the whole child, nurturing not just what they know but who they are becoming.
It’s rooted in the belief that each child brings something unique to the classroom. In this environment, learning isn’t only about mastering subjects. It’s also about developing empathy, confidence, and a sense of responsibility to others.
One parent shares their experience:
"Our family has been part of UFS for five years. We started our son in preschool looking for more outdoor learning, project-based creativity, and an individualized approach that nurtures a love for learning. We’ve found all of that and more. Each year brings a unique experience with talented teachers, and our expectations for our child’s growth are consistently exceeded. The school’s values are deeply instilled in him as he learns to become a good human, while enjoying a creative learning environment tailored to his needs. Recently, he’s eagerly contributing ideas to the school-wide farm-to-table project, integrating his love of STEAM activities. Having worked in public, private, and charter schools, I can’t express enough gratitude that a school like UFS exists."
A few key ideas shape that experience:
Community
Learning happens within a group where each voice matters. Students are encouraged to listen to one another, share ideas, and work through challenges together.
Reflection
Time is intentionally set aside for pause and thought. Practices like Meeting for Worship give students space to reflect, build self-awareness, and consider their words carefully.
Equality
Each child is seen and valued. Teachers pay close attention to individual strengths and needs, creating an environment where students feel known rather than overlooked.
Collaboration & Peaceful Problem-Solving
Whether in moments of disagreement or during projects and activities, students are guided to approach one another with honesty, care, and thoughtful attention. Through this practice, they learn to collaborate, listen deeply, and nurture relationships with respect and integrity.
A Naturally Progressive Approach
Long before “progressive education” became a common term, Friends schools were already centered around many of the same ideas: learning through experience, encouraging curiosity, and seeing students as active participants in their education.
Here’s how that shows up in practice:
Learning by Doing
Students dive into learning hands-on. Through projects, experiments, discussions, and real-world experiences, they explore concepts actively, discovering, creating, and applying knowledge rather than just memorizing facts.
Curiosity as a Starting Point
Questions are valued as much as answers. Teachers guide students to think deeply, explore ideas freely, and pursue their interests in meaningful, engaging ways.
Attention to the Individual
Teachers tailor their approach to unique learning styles, providing the right balance of support and challenge to help every student thrive.
Connection to the Real World
Learning extends beyond the classroom. Whether through service work, environmental projects, or collaborative problem-solving, students begin to see how their actions connect to the larger community.

United Friends School: Where This Comes to Life
Every day at United Friends School, learning is personal and collaborative. Students are known for who they are, classrooms foster curiosity and independence, and children work together while building strong academic and social foundations.
You’ll see it in small moments throughout the day:
A student sharing a thoughtful idea during Meeting for Worship
A group working together to solve a problem
A teacher taking the time to meet a child where they are
"As a parent of two graduates who attended K–8, and with a third currently in 4th grade, I’ve witnessed firsthand the wonderful community of dedicated teachers, administrators, and families. They truly embody the spirit of the Quaker testaments: Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship. The school plays a critical role in raising kind, caring citizens through its unique, nurturing, and holistic approach."
Over time, moments add up. Students leave not only with academic skills, but with a stronger sense of themselves and how they relate to others.

Experience the Difference
Choosing a school is a significant decision, and for many families, it becomes about more than academics.
It’s about finding a place where a child feels comfortable, challenged, and understood.
