As spring begins to blossom around us, our friends are spending even more time learning outdoors. While outdoor exploration continues at UFS throughout the winter months, spring offers new opportunities for curiosity, discovery, and connection with the natural world. This shift brings a great deal of joy to our students and our teachers love it as well. By moving beyond the classroom walls, we invite students to embrace the season of renewal firsthand while continuing to learn, grow, and connect with the world around them. Time spent outdoors enriches learning in ways that go far beyond science lessons, it helps children build resilience, teamwork, and develop lasting curiosity, appreciation, and a lifelong love for nature.

Outdoor learning is gaining recognition as a vital part of a well-rounded education. Learning outside gives children the opportunity to explore, discover, and engage with the natural world in meaningful ways, improving focus, sparking creativity, and supporting both physical and social development. And as the days grow warmer, thereโ€™s no better time to embrace them.

Outdoor learning has been a core practice at United Friendsย School (UFS)ย for all 41 years and is part of every childโ€™s day, in every season. In recent years, weโ€™ve strengthened this focus through our science program, the Outdoor Classroom, and Creek Study, giving children even more hands-on opportunities to explore, discover, and connect with nature. Children explore the creek, play and create in the mud kitchen, and engage in hands-on activities in the outdoor classroom and garden. Even our youngest friends are getting their hands in the soil, learning about worms and what lies beneath before planting seeds, caring for gardens, and harvesting their own plants. Outdoor learning sparks curiosity, encourages collaboration, and brings lessons to life in ways that go far beyond the classroom walls.

These experiences help children see the outdoors not just as a place to play, but as an extension of the classroom, where curiosity grows and learning comes to life.

What Are the Benefits of Outdoor Learning?

Research shows that spending time outdoors supports cognitive development, boosts mental health, and strengthens social-emotional skills. Here are just a few ways outdoor learning helps students thrive:

  • Enhances Focus & Reduces Stressย โ€“ Time in nature is linked to improved concentration and lower stress levels, helping students feel more relaxed and ready to learn.

  • Encourages Hands-On Explorationย โ€“ Whether conducting science experiments, observing seasonal changes, or exploring local ecosystems, outdoor learning brings lessons to life in ways that textbooks canโ€™t.

  • Promotes Physical & Emotional Well-Beingย โ€“ Outdoor learning naturally incorporates movement, supporting brain function and emotional regulation through physical activity.

  • Inspires Curiosity & Creativityย โ€“ The open-ended nature of learning outside encourages students to ask questions, think critically, and solve problems in real-world settings.

  • Fosters Environmental Stewardshipย โ€“ When students spend time learning in nature, they develop a deeper appreciation for the environment and a sense of responsibility to protect it.

How Outdoor Learning Supports the Whole Child

Outdoor education isnโ€™t just a refreshing break from routine; itโ€™s a powerful way to support the whole child. In todayโ€™s world, while children need strong academics, they also need moreย to truly thrive. They need opportunities to build confidence, navigate challenges, express themselves, and develop meaningful relationships. Nature offers all of this and more.

Outside the classroom, students engage their senses, move their bodies, and connect with the world around them in authentic ways. They take healthy risks, solve problems in real time, and collaborate with peers in ever-changing environments. A trail becomes a place to explore and investigate. A log or rock can inspire imaginative play. Through these everyday experiences, children build resilience, discover joy in learning, and develop a lasting curiosity about the world around them.

When we support the whole child, mind, body, and spirit, we nurture learners who are not only academically prepared but also emotionally grounded and deeply connected to their world.

How UFS Is Embracing Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning

At United Friends School (UFS), we understand the importance of connecting students with the natural world. Thatโ€™s why outdoor learning is a key part of our curriculum year-round. As an all-weather school, our students head outside to learn, discover, and explore in every season. Rain or shine, warm or cold, our friends are finding ways to learn outside.

Our Kindergarten through 5th-grade friends participate in Creek Study, which meetsย every other week. Friends are foundย observing seasonal changes, collecting water samples, and investigating local wildlife firsthand. Our Outdoor Classroomย provides a dedicated space for reading, writing, science experiments, and group activities, surrounded by the beauty and calm of nature.ย

Outdoor Learning

Caring for the Earth is one of our core values. Thatโ€™s why our outdoor learning program weaves sustainability and environmental advocacy into everyday learning. Through hands-on experiences, students learn about the world around them and begin to understand their role in protecting it.

In the Mud Kitchen, early learners mix, pour, and experiment with natural materials, turning play into rich opportunities for problem-solving, imagination, and teamwork. Through these experiences, students develop not only academic skills but also a deeper understanding of sustainability, a connection to the natural world, and the confidence to explore, create, and grow.

Outdoor learning is a transformative approach that supports student growth, nurtures well-being, and helps children become thoughtful, curious, and environmentally conscious individuals. As spring unfolds, itโ€™s the perfect time to step outside and experience how learning in nature inspires curiosity, creativity, and confidence
