Outdoor Learning
Caring for the Earth is a core value at United Friends School. Our outdoor learning programs integrate environmental topics into science and citizenship studies, fostering a deep connection with nature and a commitment to sustainability. Through hands-on activities and exploration, students learn to advocate for clean air and water as part of their social action work. We also emphasize the importance of reducing waste and encourage students to make environmentally mindful choices in their everyday lives. By blending education and action, we inspire our students to become thoughtful stewards of the planet.
Outdoor Learning Experiences at UFS
Our outdoor learning program offers students exciting, hands-on experiences that bring their classroom lessons to life in the natural world! One of the most engaging activities is the Creek Study at Licking Run Creek, where students dive deep into the ecosystem, observe wildlife, and take action to preserve this vital waterway, empowering them to become environmental stewards. The outdoor classroom also serves as a creative space where students build benches, create a colorful pollinator garden, and explore the importance of sustaining habitats for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
We are fortunate to have our very own outdoor classroom, where students spend time tending to the gardens, sitting on the benches, and engaging in both core and co-curricular classes. This space allows friends to learn outdoors, whether it’s conducting experiments, reading, or participating in team activities, all while enjoying the beauty of our campus. Field trips to Nockamicon State Park and Cape May, where students enjoy bird watching, allow them to experience nature firsthand, deepening their understanding of ecosystems. These enriching experiences not only make science come alive but also equip students with valuable problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork skills that will last a lifetime!
