✨Farm to Table Curriculum Night 🌾✨
What a joyful evening! Throughout our main school building, families explored engaging Farm-to-Table projects created by friends from Preschool through 8th Grade—each display showing curiosity, care, and so much creativity. The Helman-Osborn Class filled the Big Room with incredible work, and students proudly guided their families through classrooms, sharing their own learning and celebrating their peers.

Smiles, laughter, learning, and community were everywhere. Nights like this remind us how meaningful project-based learning truly is. ❤️

🍞 Our Rustin Class (TK/K) took their Farm-to-Table exploration to the griddle this week! They have learned much about how wheat is harvested and ground into flour. The children worked together to measure, mix, and knead simple doughs by hand. They discovered how flatbread and pancakes—two of the world’s oldest and simplest breads—connect people across cultures. As little scientists, they observed textures and changes from dry flour to smooth batter; as mathematicians, they counted scoops and measured carefully; and as a caring community, they shared their freshly made bread with one another. This hands-on project blended our studies of science, math, and global connections—reminding us that even a small pancake can carry a big story. YUM! 🥞

Students picked apples and even learned the names of different apples. Today, students used the apples they picked from the orchard to make applesauce! What a delicious treat! 🍏

Whether they’re working on fun projects, playing games, or tackling hands-on activities, it’s a joyful opportunity for younger and older students to learn from one another and build meaningful friendships. Students have been working on setting up and observing hydroponic growing stations, creating mandalas with natural materials outside, and playing community building games. What a special time with our partners! 🤩

🍁Fall is in the air at UFS! 🍁

🖌️ The Mott Class (Preschool) has been hard at work on their fall landscape. Today, students made paint from walnut shells and charcoal that will be used on the landscape. They have been learning about the food and shelter that trees provide for people and animals in the fall, and are starting to explore the other ways that trees provide materials and tools that we can use to build and create things. 🌳

🍂 The Rustin Class (TK/K) explored leaves up close. The math curriculum’s calendar has been revealing a “surprise leaf” each day — helping students spot patterns, colors, and shapes while counting and predicting what might come next. Inspired by all that leafy fun, each student selected a leaf or two, painted it carefully with white paint, and gently pressed it onto black paper to create a beautiful contrast print. The results were stunning — and the classroom was filled with cheerful chatter about shapes, symmetry, and nature’s surprises. 🍁✨

Students closely studied the double-crested cormorant and had the opportunity to observe and sketch the birds. They also conducted water tests for phosphate, nitrate, pH, and dissolved oxygen and recorded their results. The trip concluded with an exploration of the shoreline and some snacks. What a beautiful afternoon spent outdoors! 🦆🧪✨

We’re excited to share that United Friends School will launch a new toddler program, First Light, in January 2026.

First Light is a full-day, play-based experience for two-year-olds, grounded in Quaker values, nature-based learning, and nurturing relationships. Children will enjoy a daily rhythm of music, movement, storytelling, outdoor play, and sensory exploration in a warm and thoughtfully designed classroom space.

This program responds to a growing need in our community for care that is not only full-day, but also deeply intentional. By welcoming children at an earlier age, we strengthen the foundation of our school community and extend the UFS experience to even our youngest learners.

We were thrilled to host an energizing trial class of EP On The Move here at United Friends School. Enthused participants brought incredible energy, and our campus was filled with movement and connection.

Last week at the “In the Garden” camp, our campers got their hands dirty weeding the garden, planting beans, and learning about the fascinating world of worms—complete with some creative worm-inspired art! They also painted pots and planted seeds, and even set up their own mock farm stand. This week, at “Handwork & Crafting” camp, campers explored their artistic side by creating beautiful still-life flowers using oil pastels and watercolors. It’s been an amazing time, and there’s so much more excitement ahead! 🪴🪱🌻

They got to see some farm tools, turn and explore compost beds, and see different stages of plant life cycles in the greenhouse and fields. The students were especially excited to see the big pigs and feed them chocolate treats! 🐷

🛶 Kayaking by a volcano and to La Fortuna Waterfall
🦜 Taking a boat tour at Palo Verde National park where we saw local wildlife (monkeys, crocodiles, birds, iguanas)
🤿 Snorkeling at a bay close to the Pacific
🍛 Enjoying authentic Costa Rican meals
🥾 Hiking at Rincón de la Vieja National Park
🌋 Visiting the Arenal Hot Springs (heated by a volcano)

A lot of weeding, planting, and gardening today followed by a special Meeting for Worship outside this afternoon! 🌱🌳

A lot of weeding, planting, and gardening today followed by a special Meeting for Worship outside this afternoon! 🌱🌳

🌼🌷 The Mott Class (Preschool) is ready for Spring! This week, they took a walk around the neighborhood to discover signs of spring in the landscape around us, such as green grass and leaves, flowers and buds, bugs and butterflies, birds, and warm sunshine. They also inspected their garden bed, cleaned out the old plants, and planted some new bulbs and seeds that they will care for and tend to over the next few weeks. We hope for beautiful blooms and delicious garden treats soon! ☀️🌸

🌟 Our Helman-Osborn (5th-8th) friends had an unforgettable visit to Steve Tobin’s studio in Quakertown! After researching his work, they got to see pieces like Bronze Roots, Squeezes, and Exploded Earth up close and hear his incredible stories. Steve, a former UFS parent, even did some demonstrations, bringing his creative process to life! Our first response to his amazing art was a collective “WOW.” Experiencing his work in real-time was truly inspiring—what an amazing opportunity to learn from a world-renowned artist! 🎨✨

Last week, the Penn class spent the afternoon in our UFS garden clearing the evergreen branches from the planters, cleaning the garden, prepping the beds by making sure they have plenty of leaves as coverage, and learning more about the compost areas. Over the weekend, the Garden Committee met at school to install designated composting areas using pallets. Signs marking each area will be coming soon. We already saw strawberry plants and lettuce starting to grow! All of our classes will be planting and working in the garden soon! 🍓🥬✨
