UFS Welcomes New Preschool Teacher, Kim Malcolm

Kimberly Malcolm will be the newest addition to the UFS faculty. Malcolm will be teaching our three year old preschool Mott class when the 2013-2014 school year begins this fall.

Malcolm has been a teacher for more than 20 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania as well as a Masters of Art in Education of the Hearing Impaired from Columbia University. In addition, Malcolm has obtained nursery/kindergarten private schools certification and is a certified elementary, hearing impaired and English as a second language teacher. She also has over 13 years of experience working with students who have specific reading, writing or developmental disabilities.

“I am very excited to be joining the progressive faculty at United Friends School,” says Malcolm.  “UFS shares a lot of the same teaching philosophies as I do and I’m looking forward to being an integral part of shaping and developing the young minds that come in to this school.”

Malcolm’s teaching philosophy and elements she hopes to impart to her students include: thinking creatively, exploring their environment, reacting independently, and demonstrating honesty and love for our neighbor. She enjoys instructing through a thematic based approach. After choosing a particular topic, Malcolm provides her students with many samples of literature to read and review. She then weaves in hands-on materials, games, art and activities to make the exercise fun while encouraging language and cognitive growth. As the activities change with each theme or topic, the classroom is kept vibrant and exciting.

“We are so pleased to have Kimberly join our UFS faculty and we were inspired by her education, former experiences as a teacher, and approach toward helping her students grow in the classroom,” says Nancy Donnelly, Head of School at UFS. “We have no doubt that she will do great things with our young students at UFS and look forward to welcoming her in the fall.”

In addition to UFS’ current preschool programs, the school is now offering full day preschool for three and four year olds. All full day programs include Spanish, library, music and physical education.
