Heritage Conservancy Youth Conservation Award
For several years, UFS middle school students monitored the section of the Licking Run Creek that runs through Quakertown Memorial Park. They mapped its flow as part of the Tohickon Creek watershed. Although chemical tests were within a normal range, the creek’s biotic index was consistently low. Out of concern for the creek and the students’ desire to increase public environmental awareness, UFS students proposed an ordinance to Quakertown Borough Council. On March 2, 2011, Quakertown Borough Council Ordained and Enacted Ordinance 1177, based on the Ordinance Proposal Presented by United Friends School middle school students.  To learn more about the UFS creek study, click here.

Citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives presented a citation to UFS Middle School students who involved the whole school in conducting a multi-year study of the Licking Run Creek that runs through Quakertown Memorial Park. When the results of the study were culled, the students were inspired to protect the creek and proposed an ordinance to Quakertown Borough that ultimately passed with full support. As a result, Quakertown Creek is a healthier environment today.
