We are in full hiring mode for the Penn and Hollingshead positions. The hiring committee, composed of five members of the faculty and staff, is poring through the application materials that we have received, which have been numerous. We have posted the position on The Friends Council and PAIS (Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools) websites. In our job listing, we have indicated the following: “Seeking a joyful, energetic teacher(s) for a multi-graded 1-2 (and 2-3) class. Applicants must be skilled in using a workshop approach to language arts, constructivist approach to math, discovery-based science and social studies programs, non-standardized forms of assessment, and diverse learning styles. Candidates must be comfortable using classroom technology, have strong classroom management skills, and a strong commitment to professional growth. Comfort with Quaker testimonies is a must. Teachers work collaboratively and participate in the full program of an independent school in addition to classroom responsibilities and must have a commitment to promoting a diverse classroom and community…”
This sounds like a tall order, but we know that it is possible, considering our current faculty and the numerous applicants (well over 50.) We will be conducting tours and first rounds of interviews in the next few weeks. Finalists will participate in formal interviews with the entire hiring committee and be asked to teach a lesson. When we have hired our new teachers, I will make sure that you have an opportunity to meet with them and welcome them into our community. Please contact me if you have any questions.
We look forward to the return of our middle school students who have had a glorious week in Costa Rica. We have been following their blog and enjoying the photographs of the rainforest, Cloud Forest School, and Monteverde Friends Meeting, and many other sites. I’m sure they will be full of stories when they return.
Enjoy this beautiful, seasonal weather,
Nancy Donnelly, Head of School
