UFS was founded as a cooperative school in 1983 by a group of parents seeking an education for children based on the Quaker principles of care for one another, truthfulness, simplicity, community, and peaceful settlement of disputes. They sought to create a school where parent involvement would not only be welcome, but expected.

The Quaker focus on the Spirit of God in each person continues to be the foundation upon which we build our school community. This focus includes listening to concerns, exploring new ideas, giving generously of ourselves, and considering choices that strengthen us as a whole.

Our family-centered approach provides a special opportunity to enrich the entire family's experience through school and community activities. Parental commitment to volunteerism and fundraising provide the backbone of our community and allows for a diverse range of families seeking independent schooling. This diversity enriches our educational program and nurtures our spiritual lives. Through careful stewardship of resources, the school attempts to balance its physical and program needs with its desire to maintain an academically and socio-economically diverse student population.
